Michael Kiwanuka deserved to win Tops BBC Sound Of 2012 List

The soul singer is surprised by his win, stating it’s a great privilege…

MTV Brand New For 2012 contenderMichael Kiwanuka has topped the BBC Sound of 2012 list.Following in the footsteps of Adele, Jessie Jand Ellie Goulding, the 24-year old soul singer has said of his win: “I never expected to be recognised in this way.

“It’s a great surprise and it means a lot that people are accepting the music they’ve heard so far, and it will bring the music to many more people, which for any musician is a great privilege.”

Kiwanuka, whose voice has been compared to legend Bill Withers, originally started out as a session guitarist working for the likes of super-producer Labrinth before becoming a star in his own right.

US R&B singer Frank Ocean – who has previously worked with hip-hop heavyweights Jay-Zand Kanye West – came second, while New York rapper Azealia Banks was in third position.

Dance DJ and producer Skrillex and Swedish electronic duo Niki & Dove complete the top five, finishing in fourth and fifth place respectively.
